fall2013-print13-newsletter-2Chicago’s PRINT show is recognized as the most expansive exhibition in the Americas for the print industry – and this year was no exception, with nearly 25,000 total participants in attendance. Standard was pleased to welcome hundreds of visitors and VIP guests to its 8,100 square-ft. booth to tour the latest feeding and finishing solutions. More than 20 different applications were running live to simulate real-world production environments, including personalized direct mailers with variable coupon perforations, greeting cards, variable short-run books, PUR perfect-bound photo books, full-color/full-bleed booklets, and a variety of  unique folding applications.

In a world first, Standard demonstrated the Smart Binding System for continuous-feed digital print, producing short-run, variable books or different size and thickness at speeds up to 2,000 books per hour. The system combines a Hunkeler unwinder and rotary cutter with Horizon folder, gluing/pressing stations, perfect binder, intelligent accumulator and three-knife trimmer. Rolls pre-printed by Canon and Screen were converted into finished books in a continuous, fully automated, touch-free process.

In a North American premiere, Standard showed the Horizon BQ-280PUR Perfect Binder, specially designed for professional-quality production of digitally printed books, personalized photo books, smaller sample runs, and other ultra short-run work. The binder features single-person operation, fully automated set-up, and an automated, sensor-activated digital caliper systems for consistent measurement of book block thickness every time.

In another North American debut, Standard demonstrated the Hunkeler Roll-to-Signature Book Block Solution producing ready-to-bind, glued book blocks from 30″ wide digital webs. Rolls pre-printed by HP were processed into 4, 6, and 8-page signatures on the PF7 double plow folder and transferred to the new high-performance CS6-HS cutter and SD7 double star wheel delivery unit for non-stop operation up to 650 fpm.

crf362-creaser-folderCrowds also gathered around the new Standard Horizon CRF-362 Creaser/Folder, designed for creasing and folding digital color output up to 5,000 sheets per hour in one pass, with no cracking. This solution was busy producing restaurant menus, greeting cards, book covers, brochures, and other marketing collateral at the show.

Camera-based inspection systems were also running prominently throughout the booth to demonstrate quality control, tracking, end-to-end system control and document reporting.
