In September 2015, the acclaimed PostPress Magazine, associated with the foremost print finishing trade associations in the US – the Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) and the Binding Industries Association (BIA), partnered with MGI Digital Technology and other notable companies for a unique project. This collaboration led to a specially crafted GRAPH EXPO 2015 version of the quarterly magazine, featuring Personalized & Variable Data Foil (VDF) Embossed Cards on the cover.

As the mouthpiece of the nation’s highly skilled print finishing experts, PostPress Magazine provides an educational platform, detailing the latest business and technology trends for those looking to enhance their printed output.

Enhanced Print Profitability

Jeff Peterson, FSEA’s Executive Director, stated that the fusion of novel digital methodologies and the traditional craftsmanship of their members represents the postpress industry’s future. He stressed how the MGI-collaborated personalized embossed foil project exemplified the enhancement digital methods could bring to print materials in an increasingly interconnected, multi-channel world.

Kevin Abergel, MGI’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing, spoke about their integrated JETvarnish 3D Spot UV Coater & iFOIL solution’s unique VDF and digital embossing capabilities. He noted the system’s potential to produce special effects up to 200 microns in height in a single pass, suitable for specialty embossing tasks.

MGI’s esteemed Business Partners, including Mohawk Fine Papers, KDX America (providing lamination film), and API Foils, collaborated on this project. The cards were cut by The Printer’s Edge, a top finisher and FSEA member, while the magazine was printed by the commercial printer and publishing specialist, Allen Press.

How was it done?

Each card was printed on the MGI Meteor DP8700 Xl+ with variable data (VDP) and enhanced with the JETvarnish 3D & iFOIL using VDF techniques. These MGI technologies, including the recently awarded MGI iFOIL (recipient of the 2015 InterTech Technology Award from the Printing Industries of America), underpinned the project’s success.

Abergel also urged all print finishers and printers seeking to expand their businesses with profitable new digital finishing services to explore the benefits of joining the FSEA & BIA organizations.
